    What Do Elders Do?

    They…

    • Watch out for our souls
    • Visit the hospitals
    • Counsel
    • Listen
    • Attend funerals
    • Sit through long meetings
    • Spend lots of time away from their families
    • Pray
    • Solve problems
    • Win souls
    • Restore the erring
    • Greet visitors
    • Teach Bible classes
    • Attend weddings
    • Encourage weak members
    • Spend time with God
    • Care for those without homes and parents
    • Study their Bibles
    • Make sure the truth is preached
    • Work for a living
    • Cry with the brokenhearted
    • Love the unlovable
    • Cast a vision for the people
    • Set an example with their lives
    • Make phone calls and visits
    • Pay special attention to children
    • Manage the Lord’s money
    • Learn the names of new members
    • Have people into their homes for meals
    • Are concerned about church growth
    • Rebuke
    • Listen to complaints
    • Spend sleepless nights

    To sum it up, elders…

    help us get to heaven

    (and 1001 different things).

No wonder Paul said, “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor…” (1 Timothy 5:17)

And “Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work…” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).
